November 24, 2008- New Technology Assignment: Day 5 (absent)

November 24, 2008

This article talks about a frying pan with a built in thermometer. You have to remove the thermometer from the handle before washing the pan, but it could be very useful in teaching basics.

I love to bake, and there is a lot of times where I wish I had a built in thermometer. I would buy something like this, but in pot form. All kinds of cooking utensils with built in thermometers are probably on their way now.

Novemeber 24, 2008- New Technology Assignment: Day 4 (absent)

November 24, 2008

This article talks about a new navigator for your car. However, it is not just a navigator of the 50 US states; it is also includes Canada and Puerto Rico,  with voice guided directions, a multimedia player, and a SD-card slot. This gadget is list priced at $399. It is user friendly. You can store up to 300 addresses for your favorite places, and it is approximately 2.3 pounds.

For someone who has a terrible sense of direction, I think this would be very useful to me if I ever went on a road trip. When my mother and I visited colleges this summer in north east, we would have been terribly lost if we hadn’t had a navigator, but we managed. I think, in the future, the will just start building these into the cars themselves, rather than selling them separately.

Novemeber 24, 2008- Email Kwizzzzz

November 24, 2008

1. Should. You should do this so that people can know what the email is about before hand.

2. Shouldn’t. You would be forwarding the email to people who had already received it.

3. Shouldn’t. You could be advertising your email address to people you don’t know.

4. Shouldn’t. You should use the “bcc” field in this case.

5. Shouldn’t. Your email address could be hidden for a reason.

6. Should. People may not know who you are by your email address alone, so it is necessary to include both.

7. Shouldn’t. This will give other people’s addresses to people they might not know.

8. Shouldn’t. This is a chain mail and you should just delete it.

9. Shouldn’t. Not everyone has time to look at cute pictures of puppies and you would just be taking up space in their inbox.

10. Should. You wouldn’t want your email address all over the Internet, so you should respect the privacy of others.

November 19, 2008: New Technology Assignment, Day 3

November 19, 2008

This article talks about a new invention that, when your child puts it on their face, it keeps track of how many times they chew. The author calls the invention a sick, demented, headgear. The headgear plays a song when it reaches 1000 chews. The author says that there is a proven side effect of obesity.

To me, it seems like another way for parent to teach their children manners, but in an obscure way. Parents are always telling their kids to chew their food or they will choke, or that it is impolite to eat fast. But there is no way this can affect me. My parents would never spend money on a thing like this, and I would never subject my child to something like this.  And wouldn’t chewing more help you lose weight rather than gain it?

Novemeber 18, 2008: New Technology Assignment, Day 2

November 18, 2008

This article talks about ordering food through your TiVo.  Domino’s Pizza and TiVo recently teamed up to create a way for people to order pizza, side orders, and drinks, up to $100, from their DVR menu.  The person who posted this article thinks it is the start of a great campaign.

I think this is a crazy idea. But it is a great idea for the delivery food industry and couch potatoes. Soon it won’t be just Domino’s Pizza people can order, it will be Chinese food, Sonic will be delivering. People will never have to leave their house if they don’t want to. In some ways, this is convenient, and in others it is disgusting, and hopefully I will never stoop so low as to order Pizza through my tv.

Novemeber 17, 2008: What is a Computer Virus?

November 17, 2008

A computer virus is “a piece of code that is secretly introduced into a system in order to corrupt it or destroy data. Often viruses are hidden in other programs or documents and when opened, the virus is let loose.” Some can wipe out everything on your hard drive. According to Consumer Reports, computer viruses have contributed to $8.5 in consumer loses.

In the 1980s, hackers, those responsible for these viruses, used to have to save their virus to a disk and distribute it that way. Now it is much more simple. They are spread through the Internet, through links. The Internet makes it possible for one person to slow or damage thousands of computers that are linked to it. They can write a program to do this, or fill the computer with so much useless information, that it stops working.

November 17, 2008: New Technology Assignment, Day 1

November 17, 2008

This article talks about  having a large amount of fruit trees in ones backyard. There is one fruit in particular that is different from the rest, called Feijoa Fruits, also called pineapple guavas. The author lives in L.A. and has all these fruit trees in her backyard.

I think it would be great if everyone had fruit trees in their backyards. An easy snack right there. In the recession we are currently in, it might be wise if people could go back to growing their own food, rather than wasting their money on other, less healthy foods.

November 5th, 2008: What has changed?

November 5, 2008

What has changed now that Barack Obama is now the President-elect of the United States of America? Lots. The US now has elected its first African American President, and one who was only in his first term in the Senate. This shows how far the US has come since the 1960s and before. As for what will change, hopefully a lot. Hopefully there will be better health care, a more stable economy, and an end to the endless war, finally.

I will go to college, not move to Canada, and be a little bit happier than I would have been if Sarah Palin had ended up as VP of the US. I will probably do more community service than I would have if Obama had not been elected.
